Best Coffee Shops in Iowa City: A Local's Guide
Whether you're settling into a new role at the University of Iowa, starting a medical rotation at UIHC, or just getting your bearings in a new city, finding a good coffee shop is one of those small things that makes a place feel like home. Iowa City has a thriving cafe scene — here are the spots worth knowing about.
The Java House
If Iowa City has a coffee institution, this is it. The Java House started in 1994 as a University of Iowa entrepreneurship class project above Prairie Lights Bookstore, and it's grown into the city's most recognized coffee brand. The downtown flagship on East Washington Street serves individual pour-over brews, a full espresso menu, and baked goods that locals swear by — the cinnamon rolls in particular have a devoted following.
The space has warm lighting, art on the walls, and enough seating that you can usually find a spot even during the midday rush. They also house Heirloom Salad Co. if you need lunch. Open daily from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM, it's one of the longest-running options in town.
Best for: The all-around classic. Great coffee, long hours, central location.
fix! Coffee
Tucked on the second floor of The Chauncey building (above the FilmScene cinema), fix! Coffee is easy to walk right past — and that's part of its charm. Once you find it, you're rewarded with a sleek, minimalist space flooded with natural light and panoramic views of downtown Iowa City.
fix! sources beans from a rotating selection of roasters across the country and serves teas from August Uncommon out of Los Angeles. Their matcha lattes are widely considered the best in town. The baristas are friendly and knowledgeable, and the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance between lively and focused. If you're working remotely and need a change of scenery, this is your spot.
Best for: Remote work, matcha lattes, and a view.
The Encounter Cafe
The Encounter Cafe on South Clinton Street is where coffee meets a seriously good breakfast. They use locally sourced, organic Iowa products — free-range eggs, fair-trade beans — and bake everything fresh from scratch daily. The waffles, omelets, and paninis are the real draw here, and the coffee is a worthy companion.
The space has charming farm-inspired decor and a welcoming vibe. Expect a line on weekend mornings — locals will tell you it's worth the wait. Open Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 2:30 PM (closed Sundays). This is more of a "start your day right" cafe than a laptop camp, but if you're craving the best breakfast-and-coffee combo in Iowa City, this is the one.
Best for: Breakfast. Easily the best food-forward cafe in town.
DAYDRINK
With a motto of "A Coffee Shop That Gives a Damn," DAYDRINK takes its ethics as seriously as its espresso. They roast their own beans from ethically sourced growers around the world, serve to-go drinks in reusable glass jars, and bake their sustainability commitment into everything they do.
Their Bowery Street location is in a charming historic building with eclectic, playful decor and a warm community feel. It's a short walk south of downtown but just far enough off the beaten path to stay relaxed. Open daily — weekdays from 7:00 AM and weekends from 8:00 AM, both closing at 4:00 PM.
Best for: In-house roasted coffee, sustainability-minded vibes, and a chill atmosphere.
Sidekick Coffee & Books
Sidekick Coffee & Books is a combined cafe and bookstore in the University Heights neighborhood, just southwest of campus. Owner Katy Herbold built it as a community hub, and it delivers — gourmet coffee, fresh baked goods, ice cream, and a curated book selection all under one roof.
The real appeal for remote workers and mid-term renters: it's quiet enough to focus but lively enough to have a vibe, and the neighborhood location means you avoid the campus rush entirely. Open seven days a week from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. If you're staying at one of our Benton or Coral Ct properties, this one is especially convenient.
Best for: A calm neighborhood escape with books and great coffee.
Press Coffee
Located on North Dodge Street, Press Coffee specializes in French press coffee and holds a perfect 5.0 rating across multiple review platforms — a rare achievement for any business. Reviewers consistently praise the coffee quality, the breakfast sandwiches, and the genuinely warm service.
Press opens at 6:00 AM (earlier than most Iowa City shops), making it a go-to for early risers. The space is north of the downtown core, so it stays calm throughout the day. If you're the type who likes to be settled in with a coffee before the rest of the city wakes up, this is your place. Open daily until 6:00 PM.
Best for: Early mornings, French press coffee, and a perfect track record.
Prairie Lights Cafe
Iowa City is a UNESCO City of Literature, and Prairie Lights Bookstore is ground zero for that identity. The cafe on its second floor is an institution in its own right — coffee, espresso, specialty drinks, and even beer and wine, surrounded by walls of art and shelves of books, with window seats overlooking Dubuque Street.
Prairie Lights regularly hosts author readings and literary events, so there's always something happening. The atmosphere is distinctly bookish and cozy — perfect for reading, writing, or just soaking in Iowa City's creative energy. Opens at 10:00 AM (later than most), so plan accordingly. A heads-up: the cafe has been cash-only in the past, so bring some just in case.
Best for: Literary atmosphere, author events, and a uniquely Iowa City experience.
Kindred Coffee
One of Iowa City's newest additions, Kindred Coffee opened in mid-2024 on North Linn Street in the charming Northside neighborhood. Co-owners Molly Kirby and Connor Jenkins bring a plant-forward, entirely gluten-free menu alongside ethically sourced specialty coffee and locally crafted foods. Whole milk is available for your latte.
The Northside has a walkable, village-like feel that's distinct from the Pedestrian Mall area, and Kindred fits right in — warm, community-oriented, and thoughtfully curated. Open weekdays 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and weekends 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Best for: Plant-forward eats, gluten-free options, and exploring the Northside.
